Modern/Chic meets Elizabethan

Here, I took an image from my ‘Modern/Chic 2.0’ research post and customised it to make it relate to my Elizabethan quote. I chose to keep it simple, creating a flame inspired hair style from red and orange card which contrasts the black and white image beneath.

Elizabethan Introduction

An important part of The Fundamentals of Hair & Postiche unit is to gain a significant understanding of historical contexts and how the fashions and techniques from various eras have impacted the trends and styling methods of today.

The Elizabethan era is my first historical brief. After researching ‘Elizabethan hair’ extensively, I will create designs, some traditional and others with influences of contemporary styles.

Practically, I will be able to create these designs on a model thanks to the skills and techniques in hair styling that I will be taught during workshop sessions. 

I plan to use this blog to document my research and design process and the general build up and conclusion of this entire brief.

Elizabethan Quote Collage

I previously uploaded a post titled 'Elizabethan Quote'. The pictures from this post as well as some key words from the quote, (‘fire’, ‘heat’, ‘sun’, ‘red’ and ‘golden’) inspired me to create my own design. This is my collage, interpreting the quote. 

As you can see, I was particularly inspired by the word ‘fire’, envisioning the hair as flames. I used ribbon in my collage as I find the movement of ribbon reflects the movement of fire. My colour palette is definitely red, orange and yellow and I used cardboard pieces in these colours to replicate this.

The hair style I have created here would be up and off the face, styled into peaks. Lots of back-combing and hairspray would be required to maintain a firm structure. I’d use coloured hairspray to get the ascending colours of red to yellow.

Elizabethan Quote

Today, changing your hair colour is a very easy process thanks to the research advances in the hair industry. Thanks to the hundreds of brands out there, we have the choice or any colour, any duration and any medium. However, though the desire to dye hair has been around for centuries, the easy processes have not. In the Elizabethan era, women would go to great extents to dye their hair. Here is an interesting quote about the process from the Elizabethan era.  Below are a few images that I feel, represent the quote. 

"To make the hair yellow as golde. Take the rine or scrapings of Rubarbe, and stiepe it in white wine, or in cleere lie; and after you have washed your head with it, you shall weatte your hairs with a Spoonge or some other cloth, and let them drie by the fire, or in the sunne; after this weatte them and drie them againe."

MODERN • CHIC • MIRANDA

Defining the adjectives ‘modern’ and ‘chic’ in a single image is easier said than done, especially with the constant changes and evolutions of styles and trends we have to deal with. However, to me, nobody expresses ‘chic’ and ‘modern’ more successfully than the timeless model Miranda Kerr. Pictured here at the Golden Globe awards, her entire presence, hair, makeup, outfit and accessories, screams grace, elegance and poise.

She adheres perfectly to the current trend of hairstyles. Everybody is yearning for luscious flowing locks of loosely curled or wavy hair. Fringes, not so much, but a ‘fall into place’ parting to suit the particular face shape.

Miranda could not be more on point, sporting a gorgeous Zuhair Murad gown in a tasteful crimson red tone with a provocative deep plunging neckline and equally daring thigh-high-slit. To complement the red of her dress, a glossy red lip. It is a fact that men are more attracted to women who wear red. In a culture where attention is very important, as is the desire to convey sexuality, it is entirely understandable why Miranda opted for this colour palette.

Miranda’s entire presentation is rounded off by the big, bejewelled earrings, offering a pop of alternate colour to the image and all round following a popular trend of statement jewellery.

All these elements make for a sophisticated, elegant appearance and undoubtedly defines ‘chic’ and ‘modern’.
